HISTORY OF VESSEL:

This Westsail 42 was originally delivered to the first owner as a sailaway cutter kit in 1975. He used the vessel with a partially finished interior for a number of years. In 1980 he decided to have Bud Taplin at Worldcruiser Yacht Company do the work that he had not finished. The vessel was hauled out and taken to Worldcruiser's yard in Costa Mesa, CA. Before the work was started the owner decided to sell the boat due to family medical problems.

Worldcruiser had just completed the construction of two 44' schooners, and a customer came in asking for a custom built boat with a schooner rig. He decided to purchase the unfinished Westsail 42 after Bud told him he could redesign the cutter rig to make a schooner out of her. The vessel was completed for this new owner in 1981. The boat was used and sailed in the Pacific, then shipped to the East Coast, and finally sailed to Florida.

SCHOONER RIG:

The schooner is a very versatile and balance rig, if it is designed properly. It's a wonder more naval architects do not use this rig in place of a ketch rig, as it makes much more sense. The problem is that they think in terms of the old gaff rig schooner, which is really not practical in this day and age of dacron sails and aluminum masts and booms. The beauty of a staysail schooner rig in heavy weather is that you can fly the fore staysail, main staysail, and reefed main, and the rig is all inboard, and balanced in the center of the sailplan. For very heavy weather or heaving to, you can use the fore staysail and main staysail; or the main staysail by itself in extremely serious wind conditions, and that sail is in the center of the boats rig.

PRESENT CONDITION OF VESSEL:

The prior owner decided to have the interior remodeled. He had a carpenter start the job, and had the headliner and most of the interior furniture removed. The furniture was partially replaced, then the work was halted, and the boat sat idle for a number of years.

I have contracted with a professional boatbuilder in Florida to complete the refurbishing, and she is now almost completed. The boatbuilder I contracted with is very familiar with the quality of construction of the boats, and is putting that knowledge and care into this remodel.

The exterior of the boat; masts, rigging, sails, deck hardware, electric anchor windlass, Yacht Specialties cable steering system, etc. are all in good condition.

The engine is fine, a Perkins 4-108 diesel that was replaced just prior to the boat being stored, with low hours of running time. The engine room is easily accessible from both port and starboard sides. I had the fuel tanks professionally cleaned, and were reported to be in very good condition.

The forward area is still in original condition, with a spacious sail and chain locker. The lockers are easily accessible from a hatch on the foredeck. A formica lined stall shower is located aft of the sail locker. The aft stateroom has the double berth in it, with many lockers.

All new cushions have been made, with excellent quality foam and covering.

An impressive new electrical panel is installed, and most of the rewiring has being done. The galley area is spacious, with an excellent layout and ample storage. There is Force 10 propane stove, extensive Seafrost cold plate refrigeration system (partially installed), good battery charger, new aluminum hatches, new fixed windows, and a lot of miscellaneous equipment/items aboard.

Contact me if you are seriously interested, and want to purchase a very fine Westsail 42 at an attractive price. There is still some minor completion work necessary on the interior, but can be easily accomplished while still using the vessel.

For additional information please feel free to contact me through Bud Taplin, who has recently seen the vessel, and as well as selling me some of the materials, is advising me on many of the completion details. Phone 714-549-9331 or Email: btaplin@westsail.com

The owner is traveling on the road, so to make an appointment to see the boat, contact a friend, Al Hackett, at 561-866-2974 in FL
