Here is one beautiful boat, which does not look her age. Unique in many ways among W43s, Truelove is well equipped for extended use offshore. Or, if you'd prefer sailing the West Indies in winter as we have done for the past nine years, she is ideal for that purpose, providing safe and comfortable passage making. She sleeps six adults in comfort, and can accommodate eight. Solar panels plus wind generator provide power at anchor without running the engine. Her light-colored decks are easy on bare feet, even in full tropic sun. Well-maintained by a loving owner who is a marine engineer and has spared no expense to keep her in the best condition possible.

History:

Truelove was built from a bare hull by an experienced sailing couple. They used skills developed while building their first boat, constructing her with the methods set forth in Ferenc Mate's classic text "From a Bare Hull." Many of the scantlings have been upsized. Thicker floors, bulkheads, chain plates, rig, propeller shaft and 100% lead ballast are just a few examples of her particularly robust construction. She was completed and launched in 1982.

We bought her in 1997 and sailed to the Eastern Caribbean the following year. There, we quickly discovered the winter sailing is as good as it is anywhere. South of the "hurricane box," a short flight from the USA, Trinidad was the logical choice for covered summer storage on the hard. Each winter we have returned to sail for a few months, so her total use has been less than four years over the past ten. Yet, much has been upgraded before and during that time.

  • Decks and coach roof newly gel coated (2006)
  • New lifelines (2008)
  • Newly refinished exterior bright work (2008)
  • New teak cockpit table (2008).
  • Heavy teak rub rails with SS facings.
  • Unique, robust bowsprit design features a 1" bobstay.
  • Dorades with big drains are effective in most any weather.
  • Topsides & bilges Awlgripped (1996)
  • Barrier coat (2002)
  • Large lazarette with 20 lb. propane locker.
Layout:

The open interior is spacious with plenty of light, even on cloudy days. Headliners and bulkheads are paneled in white formica with solid cherry trim. All interior wood was completely re-finished in 2002. The unique sole is of beautiful solid Mexican rosewood and maple. Deck prisms provide additional light to the head, engine room and nav station. Coach roof and decks are insulated, as is the hull down to the waterline. Upholstery is velour, which wears like iron and is washable.

The companionway stairs have generous treads, providing easy access between cockpit and galley. There is a single quarter berth to port at the foot of the companionway stairs, with a locker ahead of it. A four-man life raft and life jackets are stowed overhead, aft. The master cabin is to starboard, with a louvered door to close it off. It has a double berth, hanging locker, storage lockers, vanity, storage areas under both berth and sole and a full-length mirror.

The U-shaped galley is on the port side, with a centerline double sink, and a top-loading eight cubic foot freezer/fridge and propane range outboard. Corian galley countertop was new in 2008. There is a compartment with sliding doors above and outboard of the refrigerator; stacked drawers with a cabinet below at the forward end and storage beneath the sinks.

A forward-facing sit-down nav area with shelf, in-desk and chart storage is on the starboard side opposite the galley.

There are settees on port and starboard in the main saloon, with pilot berths outboard of both. A large double drop leaf Cherry table, which easily seats six, is on the centerline, supported by the mast and a leg. Six large shelves are port and starboard on the forward bulkhead. Sixteen large lockers with locking doors are port and starboard behind and below settees. There is a large deep locker at the forward end of the port settee. Beneath the sole are several large, deep storage spaces.

Forward of the saloon and to port is a head compartment, closed off by a louvered door. The door also swings aft to close off the entire forward cabin, including the head, from the saloon. There is a large sink with storage lockers under the counter and a large mirror above. A medicine cabinet with sliding doors is above a small locker outboard of the toilet.

To starboard of the head is a hanging locker and storage cabinets. The forward cabin has a full-width V-berth with filler so the berth may be used as a large double, with storage lockers under and above to port. Two deep sail lockers are under to starboard; the tops of which can double as a workbench. There is a divided rope and chain locker in the bow, accessed through doors on the forward bulkhead. All of the primary anchor chain will stow in the locker without flaking.

The engine room is under the cockpit floor, access is via a door on which the companionway stairs are mounted. Additional access is via removable hatches in the starboard cabin. Engine room is completely insulated with Soundown and is equipped with an automatic Halon system.
Mast and Rigging:

The single-spreader Kenyon mast was rebuilt and Awlgripped (1996). It is equipped with twin backstays, running backstays and intermediate shrouds in addition to the usual complement of stays. The 3/8" SS wire standing rigging (2004) is equipped with Norseman fittings and toggled to oversized chain plates. Folding aluminum steps are attached with ¼" aluminum rivets (2000). Forestay and inner forestay are fitted with Profurl NC42 furlers (1998). Garhauer rigid boom vang control (1998) led to cockpit. Spinnaker pole mounted on front of mast with track & car. Separate track for trysail.
