History:

We found Solstice in the back of a boatshed at Mount Desert Yacht Yard in Northeast Harbor, Maine where she had been moored and stored by her first owner. He had commissioned her in 1976, one of more than fifty 43's built by Westsail. Used in summer only she was in pristine condition reflecting the 9 months of each year she spent indoors. We've worked her a little harder. Under our 17-year ownership we've cruised more than 60,000 miles from Maine to Bermuda to the Caribbean and Central America. She has been the ideal liveaboard home, providing comfort, easy passage making, safety and lots of pride of ownership. She has undergone two major refits and on a continuing basis we strive to maintain her in Bristol condition. A professional Imron paint job applied in 2005 gets lots of adoring comments. In contradiction to the Wetsnail myth, Solstice makes fast passages even in light air, and when the wind is shrieking in the rigging her steadiness and easily handled split rig inspire confidence. Recently while cruising the Yucatan Coast of Mexico in company with a pack of racer-cruisers… a Tartan, a Sabre and a C&C of similar size, she constantly arrived in port first, even in light wind conditions. Mr. Crealock's hull is witchy fast.

We're regretfully selling Solstice to build a cottage in Maine near children and grandchildren. We believe Solstice is the best equipped, most attractive 43 available.

Hull and Deck:

Massively constructed of fiberglass the hull feels bulletproof. All thru hull fittings are bronze and recently serviced. The underwater surfaces were sand blasted and coated with INTERLUX 1000/2000 barrier coat in 1998.

The rugged fiberglass decks have 3/4" thick teak overlay. When a cutout was required in the cabin top for the addition of a hatch in the head we saw just how beefy the deck system is! There is more than half an inch of solid fiberglass surrounding the wooden core. It definitely would stop bullets.

Layout:

Aft of the cockpit is a cavernous lazarette containing vented propane storage, room for lines and fenders as well as access to the rudder shaft and quadrant. The self-draining cockpit is built over a removable sole allowing engine access for major refit/replacement. The sole is reinforced with a detachable steel I-beam that supports the mizzenmast. High coamings surround the roomy and comfortable, horseshoe shaped cockpit.

The ladder below (also the engine room door) leads into the galley, a layout that allows the cook to participate in cockpit affairs. The U-shaped, galley is formed by: two storage cupboards, a Force 10 gimbaled 3 burner stove with broiler and oven (sliding door storage behind), 4 stacked drawers, large freezer/refrigerator and a double stainless steel sink.

To starboard aft is a cabin with double bunk, hanging locker, concealed storage bins, a mirrored storage cabinet and additional storage areas under the bunk and cabin sole. In addition, there are two access areas to the engine compartment. To port, just aft of the galley is a quarter berth with lots of storage underneath. Opposite of the galley peninsula is a forward facing navigation station with instruments, chart storage and hinged top desk.

The interior is very traditional, but it departs from most layouts in the sense of openness achieved in the main cabin. Cushions are upholstered in ultra suede. The main salon has a long settee to starboard, which makes an excellent sea berth with the deployment of its hidden lee cloth. In port the settee can unfold and become a comfortable double berth for extra guests. The oval shaped dinette on the port side seats six comfortably around a dropleaf teak table. Bookcases line the cabin on three sides, and there is generous, easily accessed storage beneath all seating, behind the settee and in two built in cabinets.

Moving forward on the port side is the head, a Lavac Popular toilet, a sink with a mirrored medicine cabinet above and lots of storage. A shower overhead has a sump pump under a teak grate. Opposite on the starboard side is a hanging locker and concealed storage bins. Far forward is a V-berth that, with an insert, creates a large bunk. Side cupboards, above and below the bunk and a sizeable sail locker provide additional storage in this area.

Throughout the interior, bulkheads and furniture are varnished mahogany plywood with solid teak trim and corners. Doors are teak plywood with solid teak frames. The cabin sole is solid teak with holly strips.
