History:

We purchased Jura not long after selling our 24-foot cutter, Seraffyn, back in 2001. After owning and cruising that lovely wooden cutter the Pardeys so masterfully crafted, we were, shall we say, rather picky regarding a replacement. Seraffyn was tiny and a handful to maintain, so we were looking for a slightly larger boat with a fiberglass hull - albeit one with the ambiance of a wooden boat in its accommodation. Fortunately, we stumbled upon Jura. The boat has a rather interesting history. A fellow from Durham, North Carolina bought bare hull #441 in 1975 with the intention of completing the boat himself. Sadly, it sat in his backyard virtually untouched for 13 years. Eventually, a doctor from Fayetteville, North Carolina with wherewithal and means bought the hull and had the boat completed professionally between 1988 and 1993. The doctor never did go off cruising, so the boat was used very little during the 1990s. When we laid eyes on Jura in 2001, we were amazed. The boat was essentially a 1993 example of a Westsail 32. Not many of those around! We were impressed by the artistry and craftsmanship that went into the boat. The good doctor spared no expense. During a phone conversation one evening, he mentioned offhandedly that he spent over $200,000 completing the boat. We can't verify that; but, what we can attest to is that Jura is rigged and fitted out properly and that the woodworking is exquisite - particularly the interior joinery. We took possession of Jura in February of 2002 and have cruised her more than 20,000 miles - three winters in the Exumas, considerable time on the Chesapeake Bay, and a cruise north to Maine and the Bay of Fundy during the summer of 2007. All the while, we have consistently upgraded the boat and maintained her in Bristol condition. Representative of this is the work we put into the boat during the summer of 2005. Not only did we replace all the standing rigging, we also completely reworked the engine room. Everything - engine, batteries, battery charger, switches, fuel tanks, shelves, strainers, filters, hoses, and muffler, all of it - was replaced. The new engine room is all about simplicity and orderliness, and it is spotless!

The short of it is this: Jura constantly receives compliments. The complement may come relating to the beauty of her bare teak and Sea Breeze green canvas that exudes a certain "saltiness" and classic boat quality. Or, it may come relating to the unexpected spaciousness and cleanliness of her engine room. Or, it may come relating to the way she sails. And Jura sails! The "Wetsnail" tag is bunk. We have sailed away from - even done "horizon jobs" on - boats we have no business sailing away from. The boat will go to windward adequately. On a broad reach under full sail she is a sight to behold. And, the boat goes very nicely dead downwind wing and wing with the main prevented and the jib poled out. It's like a magic carpet ride - the miles just tick away.

We are reluctantly selling Jura for no other reason than a simple desire to change tacks and head off in a different direction for a while. We honestly believe Jura is the finest Westsail 32 available. She is superbly fitted out for cruising and is in all respects ready to carry on. All she needs is a willing soul.

Presently, Jura is tucked away inside a building in Maine for the season. She is winterized and "snug as a bug in a rug." Barring an extraordinary turn of events (i.e. purchase sight unseen), access to the boat will not be possible until spring of 2008. Our plan is to re-commission Jura in May (as weather permits) and to begin making preparations for a summer cruise to Nova Scotia. Following re-commissioning in the spring, we would be happy to make Jura available for inspection, survey and sea trial.
