Deliverance is custom designed, built and equipped for extended cruising by two or three people. The present owners have lived aboard since it's launching in 1987 and have cruised in Southern California and Mexico. The Westsail 42 hull has an aft cockpit, step-trunk cabin ala the Westsail 43, The deck and cabin are constructed with 1- 1/2 inch x 2 1/4 inch laminated mahogany/ash beams on 17 inch centers 10oz. glass/epoxied cloth covers 1/2 inch plywood over 1/2 inch x 2 1/2 inch ash ceiling. Deck tread covers most of the exposed surfaces. The cabin sides are 1 1/2 inch thick, composed of laminated lap-joined 3/4 in. planks of mahogany and ash. Bud Taplin oversaw the design and construction and supplied most of the materials. Deliverance is ketch-rigged with a (2) spreader, 55ft. main mast and an extra stayed mizzen mast. Removable stanchions can be rigged to amidships resulting in chest-high lifelines. Jack-lines can be set along the cabin top forward to the Main mast for personal harness hooks. The cabin top has a quick depolyment liferaft in a hard canister, 8ft. Avon, and an 8ft. hard dinghy for sailing, rowing, or outboarding. The 6ft. bowsprit holds a 45lb. and a 25lb. CQR anchor leading to a manual winch with chain and rope gypsies. Deliverance's exterior has been completely refinished this Spring.

SAILS:

All sails were manufactured by Holt-Cranfield of London, England, and are constructed of Dacron in the strongest possible manner with extra cloth, heavy stitching and needlework at all corners. All seams are hotknifed and triple-stitched. The sail inventory is as follows:

SAIL EQUIPMENT:

The forestay is enclosed in a Harkin Roller System, Unit #2. The Genoa sheets are lead aft through deck sliding roller type fair leads and turning clutch blocks to #30 Asahi (Harken clone) 2-speed, self-tailing winches. The Staysail is loose footed. Sheet leads pass through cabin top blocks to cabin top mounted 9/16 single-speed self-tailing winches. The Mainsail is controlled with a 6-part, 2-speed clutch type tackle block mounted on a bridge traveler spanning the cabin top. Pad eyes allow for close-hauled boom vang attachment at each end. The Mizzen boom is controlled by another six-part, 2-speed block. The Spars are LeFiell. All wire is from American Rigging and all ends terminate in Norseman fittings. Turnbuckles are all closed type from ShermanJohnson. The Main mast has steps up to the lower spreaders and a separate track for the Storm Tri-Sail. A 100 sq.ft. radar reflector is mounted just below the second spreader. The Main boom has two slabreefing lines. All Mainsail operations are at the Main mast. Operations are supported with P&S mast pulpits equipped with winch handle boxes. The Mizzen mast has steps to the top to service electronic equipment and antennae.

MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT:

The propulsion engine is a 4-cylinder,65hp. Ford Osco (I 92DF) diesel with a Borg-Warner 2 to I hydraulic transmission. A 4-sheave pulley on the forward end drives a 35amp and 100 amp alternator and when needed, the freezer compressor and an emergency bilge pump which can deliver up to 60 gpm. Three selectable 60gal. fuel tanks feed the engine through a large Racor filter. A separate Racor and pump allows transfer of fuel from tank to tank. Through a 1-1/4 inch monel shaft, the engine turns a 3-bladed 20" x 12" prop. A 2-bladed prop can be installed. A transmission operated shaft brake keeps the shaft motionless while under sail. Fresh water is contained in six 30gal. tanks which feed the 30psi system. Hot water is provided by a 5gal. tank heated electrically at dock side or by engine coolant when underway. A 10cu.in. Tecumseh compressor cools a 2.0 cu.ft. holding plate freezer compartment. By changing idler drive belts, the compressor can be driven by the propulsion engine or by a 1.0hp. electric motor. The bilge is pumped by an electronic sensor activated Jabsco 3gpm. unit backed up by a I gal.-per-stroke manual diaphragm pump located in the port cockpit seat locker. The shower sump is emptied via a macerator pump backed up by another manual diaphragm pump. The head is a Wilcox-Crittenden manual unit. The 4.Ohp. dinghy outboard engine is stored in the overboard vented lazarette, which also houses two 5gal. propane tanks for the galley stove Steering power is provided by a Datamarine hydraulic unit connected to a ram. The autopilot system paralells the helm unit.

ELECTRICAL ... ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT:

The vessel is completely wired for both A.C. and D.C. service. D.C. convenience outlets are provided in the galley and the forepeak work bench. Two #27 batteries are used for engine start-up while three #27 and two #24 batteries compose the "house" bank. Ampere and voltage meters display the system's condition. Manual field current controls allow fast battery changing. All circuits are controlled through magnetic circuit-breaker switches. An AC/DC refrigerator is under the galley counter top.

The auto-pilot is a Cetec-Benmar hydraulic system with a Benmar 2 1 R course setter electronic module mounted in the cockpit helm pedestal. The hydraulic unit is mounted on a port-side lazerette shelf. The gimbaled compass is mounted under the Mizzen Mast step. Sailing instruments of depth, windspeed/direction, and boat speed are by Standard Communications. A Raytheon Model 1600 Radar system has its antenna mounted on the Mizzen mast. Navigation systems include a Micrologic Loran C and GPS. Communication equipment is a Icom full channel VHF plus Ham/SSB transceiver. YASUE7576X. Addtionally a Kenwood R2000 all band receiver can be connected to a datafax decoder and 12 VDC printer for weather chart receiving. Entertainment includes a VHS player, TV with Mizzen mounted omni-direction antenna, an AM/FM radio with tape deck, and a 12 disc CD player.
